Experiential Organizations and Perspectives
Sex worker groups such as the Canadian National Coalition of Experiential Women and the BC Coalition of Experiential Women organize inclusive research projects that are respectful of sex workers and work towards following through with the subsequent recommendations Canada wide.
Experiential organizations are run by, for and with sex workers. Sex workers themselves who felt there was a need for specific services that only a sex worker could provide created some of the models used in these organizations.
While there are existing programs for female sex workers, the male and transgendered perspective fails to be fully representative within organizations due to funding and the lack of recognition.
Programming for sex workers focuses on the issues sex workers experience such as PTSD, co-dependency, low self-esteem, lack of trust for people, places and things, all-or-nothing syndrome, and grief and loss.
Peer mentorship is a model sex worker organizations use in order to remain grass roots and inclusive to the population of peoples they serve. Most organizations hire from within their membership or from participants who have completed programs. By hiring from within sex-work organizations serve as an inspiration to others and remain close to an industry that continuously evolves.
Role modeling is a natural process which happens at experiential organizations through peer support and working in an environment where sex workers are valued and treated with respect.
Groups of current and former sex workers are mobilizing across this country to work on issues of human rights of sex workers, health and safety, and the ineffectiveness of sections 210 through to 213 of the criminal code of Canada.
BC Coalition of Experiential Women/Communities/Men - The B.C. Coalition of Experiential Women is a mechanism for the voices of experiential women in the development of federal/provincial legislation and policies; the coordination and implementation of peer based programs and services; and the elimination of oppressive systems and forces that create harm within the sex industry.
