Who is Vulnerable to Sexual Exploitation

It is a common misconception that young people’s socio economic status and family life determines whether or not they are vulnerable to sexual exploitation. The fact of the matter is every young person is vulnerable especially at crucial times in his or her developmental stages. Transitioning from a child to a pre-teen and then into their adolescence is an exciting and awkward stage of their lives and not without its challenges.

It is difficult to paint a picture of a vulnerable youth and not set parents up for failure. However, there are things parents can look out for that may indicate a youth is potentially at risk of sexual exploitation. Below is a list of possible signs and we encourage parents to take a pro-active approach to supporting young people by educating themselves on the subject and be willing to talk openly about sexual exploitation.

  • Low self esteem
  • Depression
