What can we do as a community to help prevent Sexual Exploitation
Educators can implement a component on sexual exploitation into the school curriculum that is developed in partnership with peoples who have exited the industry. Awareness is key to preventing our kids from being recruited into the trade and reality based prevention materials provide valuable information.
Law Enforcement can continue to strengthen relationships with youth in schools through the liaison position, by being visible and maintaining a positive relationship.
Governments can insure that polices and laws are designed to protect the interests of our youth with a strong focus on not criminalizing sexually exploited young people. Increase the funding support for employment training and healing initiatives within youth organizations.
Media can use their positions to raise awareness about sexual exploitation by writing articles that are based in truth and are not sensationalized to sell papers. Refrain from using words like child prostitute, child sex slave, teenage hooker and replace with sexually exploited child/youth. It is also your responsibility not to publish any information or photos that are going to further exploit.
Community Members can support organizations that are helping sexually exploited youth exit into a better way of living through donating food, clothing, furniture, money or any other necessities that are expressed by the organization or service.
Travelers need to be aware of what aspects of the tourist industry are involved in the sexual exploitation of youth/children and need to refuse to support and report any aspect of it.
The Internet Service Providers can refuse to host any site that has anything to do with child porn and codes of conduct also need to be adopted and implemented.
Youth can be trained to give peer-to-peer presentations on sexual exploitation. We also encourage you to help raise awareness in schools and within your own communities about sexual exploitation. Challenge and encourage your government to create the services youth need. Change your language and refuse to use words that perpetuate the exploitation and glamorization of youth and adults who are engaged in the lifestyle. Choose to listen to music and watch videos that are respectful of women, children and other visible minorities.
Parents can educate them selves on the topic of sexual exploitation and start having a dialogue with your kids. Education is key to preventing your child from being recruited in to the trade. Parents can also make sure that the schools are making sexual exploitation, education, prevention and intervention information available to students and themselves. Lobby your government to support multi-media awareness campaigns on the realities of sexual exploitation. Support programming for the parents and family members of sexually exploited youth and children.
Everyone can get involved with raising the topic of sexual exploitation within your own homes and in your communities. People need to get involved in saving our youth from predators that are waiting to exploit them for financial gain. We need to encourage the government to protect our youth and have the proper services in place for the youth who are caught up in the sexual exploitation trade
